Tuning Forks
We tested 12 popular aluminum and steel tuning forks, comparing standard medical grade (used for Weber and Rinne tests) against "sound healing" sets.
Weighted vs. Unweighted
Weighted forks have cylindrical weights at the ends of the tines. They vibrate at lower frequencies (typically 64Hz, 128Hz, 256Hz) and are designed to be placed directly on the body to transfer mechanical energy into bone and tissue (vibroacoustic therapy).
Unweighted forks (e.g., 528Hz, 4096Hz) produce a louder, longer-lasting audible tone designed for listening via air conduction. Placing them on the body stops their vibration almost immediately.
Medical Grade (Neurological)
- Pitch Accuracy: ±0.1%
- Material: Usually steel or high-grade aluminum.
- Cost: $15 - $40 each.
- Verdict: Exceptional value. If you need a 128Hz fork for vibroacoustic testing, buy a standard medical fork.
"Healing" Sets (e.g., Solfeggio 9-Pack)
- Pitch Accuracy: ±1.5% (Often off by 2-5Hz).
- Material: Cheap aluminum alloys.
- Cost: $30 - $100 for a set.
- Verdict: Poor frequency stability. When we struck the 528Hz fork in three popular Amazon sets, it registered at 524Hz, 531Hz, and 526Hz on our oscilloscope.
The Striker Matters
Striking a fork with a hard surface (wood or plastic) excites high-frequency inharmonic overtones, creating a harsh "ping" that masks the fundamental frequency. Always use a rubber mallet or strike against the heel of the hand to ensure a pure sine wave.
