How Binaural Beats Work

Discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839, binaural beats are an auditory illusion. When you present two slightly different pure tones to each ear, the brain's superior olivary complex attempts to reconcile the difference, creating the perception of a third, pulsing tone.

For example, 400 Hz in the left ear and 410 Hz in the right ear produces a 10 Hz beat. Because 10 Hz falls into the Alpha brainwave range, listening to this setup can encourage the brain to mirror that frequency via a process called Frequency Following Response (FFR) or auditory driving.

Critical Constraints

  • Carrier Limit: The carrier tones must be below 1000 Hz. Above this, the brain uses interaural level differences rather than phase differences to localize sound, and the beat illusion breaks down.
  • Beat Limit: The difference between the two tones (the beat) must be less than 30-50 Hz. If the difference is too wide, the brain perceives them as two distinct tones rather than a single pulsing beat.
  • Hardware: Stereo headphones are mandatory. If played through speakers, the waves mix in the room (creating a monaural beat) before reaching your ears.
